The next administration should continue to distribute cash subsidies to the poor, build more roads and other infrastructure, and attract foreign investments, among others, to ease poverty and hunger in the country, a government economist said Tuesday.
National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) deputy director Dennis Arroyo admitted that many Filipinos are still hungry and poor despite the government’s efforts to uplift their conditions.

Senator Miriam Defensor Santiago on Tuesday welcomed the dismissal of the disbarment case filed against her and hailed the Supreme Court (SC) decision as a “triumph of good against evil.”
In its resolution, the SC stated: “The allegations clearly show that the same are not of the complainant’s personal knowledge. Stripped of its unnecessary trimmings, the allegations are pure hearsay. There is no showing at how, or from whom, or in what capacity, complainant knew of aforesaid allegations.

The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) advised Tuesday Filipinos planning to visit Thailand’s capital of Bangkok to postpone their trip in view of mass protest rallies in the area starting Friday, March 12, in support of ousted former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra.
“In view of the protest rallies being planned in key areas of Bangkok starting Friday, March 12, 2010, and for the duration of the rallies, Filipinos are advised to postpone all non-essential travel to Thailand, specifically Bangkok,” the DFA said in its travel advisory yesterday.

Officials and representatives of the Philippine Basketball League (PBL) on Tuesday had mixed reactions but most expressed disbelief over the reported resignation of Commissioner Chino Trinidad.
Trinidad announced his resignation without officially informing any of the league members through his Facebook message the other day where he said he has “lost his passion for the sport.”
He also said the country’s number one sport has not lived up to his expectations. “It’s in bad shape,” he said without elaborating.

SINGAPORE (Reuters) — Angelo Que and Mars Pucay will try to earn a berth in the British Open in July when they make their bid in the 36-hole qualifying at the Saujana Golf Club near Kuala Lumpur on Wednesday and Thursday.
